Chiesa di Santa Maria in Castello is a historic church and sanctuary located on a rocky hill above the town of Vecchiano in Tuscany, overlooking the Serchio Valley.

It is part of an older fortified complex whose origins date back to the late 11th century, when the site served as a strategic stronghold in conflicts involving Pisa and neighboring powers. The church itself was created around 1120 by incorporating an earlier chapel and part of the castle tower. Over the centuries, it was expanded and modified, particularly during the 16th and 17th centuries, while the military importance of the fortress gradually declined.

The building suffered significant damage during World War II because the Gothic Line passed through the area, but it was later restored through local conservation efforts. Inside, visitors can see fragments of historical frescoes, commemorative inscriptions, and other remnants of the site’s long religious history. Today, Santa Maria in Castello is valued for its cultural, historical, and spiritual significance.
