Chilbosan, also known as the Chilbo Mountains or “Mountain of Seven Treasures,” is one of the most scenic mountain regions in North Hamgyong Province, North Korea.

Its name comes from a local legend that seven treasures are hidden within the mountains. The area is famous for its dramatic granite peaks, unusual rock formations, deep valleys, forests, and beautiful coastal scenery. The mountain region is traditionally divided into Inner Chilbo, Outer Chilbo, and Sea Chilbo, each offering different landscapes ranging from rugged inland mountains to picturesque seashores.

One of its best-known cultural attractions is the ancient Kaesim Temple, which dates back to the 9th century. Much of Chilbosan is covered by mixed broadleaf and conifer forests protected within a national park. The area is also recognized for its ecological importance, supporting rare bird species and diverse wildlife, making it one of North Korea’s most significant natural landmarks.
