ChoghaZanbil Ziggurat

Iran, Iran

Chogha Zanbil is an ancient Elamite religious complex in Khuzestan Province, southwestern Iran, built around 1250 BCE by King Untash-Napirisha. The site is best known for its massive ziggurat, one of the largest and best-preserved stepped temple structures outside Mesopotamia, which was dedicated to the Elamite gods Inshushinak and Napirisha. The complex was designed as a sacred city surrounded by three concentric walls and included temples, palaces, and other religious buildings. It was eventually abandoned after being damaged during Assyrian invasions in the 7th century BCE. Chogha Zanbil is one of Iran’s most important archaeological sites and became the country’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Today, it is recognized for its outstanding preservation and for the valuable insights it provides into the civilization, architecture, and religious traditions of ancient Elam.
