Circus Maximus

Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Italy, Italy

Circus Maximus is an ancient Roman stadium located between the Palatine and Aventine Hills in Rome and was the largest entertainment venue in the Roman Empire. Primarily used for chariot races, public games, festivals, and large civic events, it could accommodate well over 150,000 spectators and became a model for similar arenas throughout the empire. Originally developed in Rome’s early history and expanded over centuries, the Circus Maximus was a central part of Roman social and religious life. In addition to thrilling chariot races, it hosted ceremonies, parades, athletic contests, and other public spectacles attended by huge crowds. Today, most of the original structure has disappeared, but the site remains one of Rome’s most important archaeological landmarks and a large public space where visitors can appreciate the scale and significance of ancient Roman engineering and entertainment.
