The City Wall of Nuremberg is one of the best-preserved medieval fortification systems in Europe and surrounds much of Nuremberg’s historic old town.

Construction began in the 12th century and continued through the 16th century, creating a defensive network of walls, towers, gates, and a deep moat designed to protect the city. Originally stretching about 5 kilometers, around 4 kilometers of the wall still remain today. The fortifications were closely linked to the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg, forming a powerful defensive system that reflected the city's importance within the Holy Roman Empire.

Today, the City Wall is one of Nuremberg’s most significant historical landmarks. Visitors can walk alongside preserved sections of the walls, admire the towers and gates, and experience a striking example of medieval military architecture that has shaped the city’s character for centuries.
