Cochem Castle
Cochem, Germany, Germany
Cochem Castle, known as Reichsburg Cochem, is a striking neo-Gothic landmark towering above the Moselle River in Cochem, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, originally built around 1000 AD by Palatinate Count Ezzo with a Romanesque core from around 1056.
Destroyed by French troops under Louis XIV in 1689, it lay in ruins until Berlin merchant Louis Ravené rebuilt it between 1868 and 1877 in the popular Gothic Revival style as a romantic summer residence, incorporating medieval remnants like the thick-walled keep.
Today owned by Cochem since 1978, the fairy-tale castle complex offers guided tours through its historic interiors, panoramic views of vineyards and the river valley, blending 11th-century foundations with 19th-century romanticism.
