Copertino Castle
Copertino, Italy, Italy
Copertino Castle is one of the largest and most impressive fortresses in Puglia, located in the town of Copertino in the Salento region.
Originally built during the Norman period, it was extensively redesigned in the 16th century by the military architect Evangelista Menga to withstand the new challenges of gunpowder warfare, giving it its powerful bastions, moat, and defensive walls. The castle combines medieval and Renaissance features, including an Angevin keep, a grand Catalan-Durazzesque entrance, spacious courtyards, and a chapel decorated with valuable frescoes.
Over time, its role shifted from military defense to that of a noble residence and administrative center. Today, Castello di Copertino is considered a masterpiece of Renaissance military architecture and one of the region’s most important historic monuments. Visitors can explore its impressive structures and learn about the rich history of Copertino and southern Italy.
