The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary in Millburn, New Jersey, is a 16.5-acre woodland sanctuary gifted to Cora Hartshorn by her father Stewart Hartshorn in 1923.

Cora developed the land into a natural space where native plants and wildlife could thrive undisturbed, creating several miles of trails among oaks, tulip trees, dogwoods, and beeches. The arboretum includes a historic Stone House built from local trap rock and serves as an educational and conservation site, featuring over 45 tree species, rare ferns, 150 species of wildflowers, and 100 bird species.

After Cora's death in 1958, the property was bequeathed to Millburn Township, and a dedicated Arboretum Association formed to protect and maintain the woods. Restoration efforts have addressed invasive species and forest health, with ongoing management activities supporting native plant regeneration and wildlife habitat.

The arboretum offers environmental education programs, summer camps, and public access to peaceful trails and a bird observatory, making it a treasured natural retreat focused on preserving New Jersey’s native biodiversity.
