Established in 1948 and named after botanist Earl L. Core, it serves as an outdoor facility for education, research, and recreation. The arboretum features approximately 3.5 miles of walking trails that pass through diverse natural habitats with more than 150 species of native trees and shrubs, as well as over 250 native herbaceous plants. It is known for its spectacular spring wildflower displays, large, centuries-old trees, and a rich variety of birds—over 180 species have been recorded.
The arboretum includes lawns with planted specimen trees, interpretive signs, benches, an amphitheater, and a visitor information kiosk. It is open daily without charge and hosts free nature education programs, serving as both an academic resource and a natural sanctuary for the public .
