Damsgård Country Mansion is a stunning rococo manor house in Bergen, Norway, built in the 1770s for General War Commissioner Joachim Christian Geelmuyden Gyldenkrantz as a lavish summer retreat amid the city's prosperous era of around 70 such aristocratic countryside estates. Recognized as Norway's finest wooden rococo masterpiece and possibly Europe's best-preserved 18th-century wooden building, it features ornate exteriors, meticulously restored interiors, and a recreated 1780s garden, originally facing the maritime approach before passing to the wealthy Janson family in 1796, who held it until 1983. Purchased by the state and Bergen for preservation, it underwent extensive restoration from 1983-1993 and now operates as a museum under Bergen Museum, though closed in 2025 for further work, showcasing continental aristocratic trends adapted to Norway's wood architecture.
