Deep Cut Gardens in Middletown, New Jersey, is a public botanical garden that spans 54 acres and is part of the Monmouth County Park System.

The land was originally settled in the late 1600s, passing through family farms until 1890 when it changed ownership multiple times. In 1928, Edward and Teresa Dangler built a Colonial Revival mansion on the property, and in 1935, notorious mobster Vito Genovese purchased it, redesigning the grounds in a style reminiscent of Naples, Italy, featuring stone walls, cascading pools, a pergola, and formal gardens.

After Genovese fled in 1937 and the mansion burned down, the property was bought by Karl and Marjorie Sperry Wihtol in 1953, who restored the gardens and built a new house that now serves as the park’s horticultural center. The park was donated to the county in 1977, dedicated in 1978, and has since expanded with restored rose gardens, demonstration plots, and a koi pond.

Deep Cut Gardens offers educational programs and serves as a peaceful place dedicated to home gardening enjoyment and horticultural education, blending rich history with vibrant natural beauty.
