Denbigh Experimental Forest

The Denbigh Experimental Forest in North Dakota was established in 1931 as part of a USDA Forest Service project to identify tree species capable of surviving the harsh Great Plains climate and to test methods for reforesting over-plowed and overgrazed land suffering from windblown sand dunes.

Over two decades, more than 40 different tree species from across the United States, Europe, and Asia were planted on the 636-acre site, while parts of the forest were preserved as natural prairie habitat. The forest serves as a vital ecological research area, documenting over 200 bird species and supporting prairie butterflies and wildflowers.

Management efforts have focused on restoring native prairie through mowing, prescribed burns, and noxious weed control to combat tree encroachment and invasive species. The associated Towner State Nursery, established in 1935 to produce tree seedlings for the planned but never realized Souris National Forest, continues to operate and produce millions of seedlings annually.

Today, the Denbigh Experimental Forest balances its historic forestry research role with conservation and public recreation, offering a unique natural landscape that reflects North Dakota's environmental challenges and stewardship.​
