Descanso Gardens
La Cañada Flintridge, California, United States
Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge, California, covers about 150 acres and was originally the private estate of E. Manchester Boddy, who purchased the land in 1937 and named it Rancho Descanso, meaning "Ranch of Rest."
Boddy, who owned the Los Angeles Illustrated Daily News, transformed the property into a lavish garden featuring thousands of camellias, roses, native plants, and fruit trees, working with horticulturists like expert camellia propagator J. Howard Asper and hybridizer Dr. Walter E. Lammerts in the 1940s.
The estate opened briefly to the public in 1950 before facing community pushback and then reopened with an admission fee in 1951. In 1953, a lease-purchase agreement made the gardens public property
