Dilsberg Castle
Neckargemünd, Germany
Dilsberg Castle, located in Neckargemünd, Germany, was built in the mid-12th century by the Counts of Lauffen as a strategic fortress to control the area against rising powers like the Electorate of the Palatinate. After passing through ownership of the House of Dürn, it became part of the Palatinate in the 14th century.
The castle expanded significantly under Elector Rupert I, who also founded the adjacent town of Dilsberg by relocating locals to create tax revenue. Dilsberg served as an administrative center and was well fortified with an outer and inner bailey, a deep 46-meter well accessed via an underground passage, and strong curtain walls.
It played key roles in regional conflicts, including occupations during the Thirty Years' War and resistance against French forces. By the 19th century, the castle fell into ruin and was even used as a quarry by locals. Its evocative ruins, surrounded by the restored town, now attract tourists and are managed as a cultural heritage site. The site also gained literary fame from Mark Twain’s writings about its legendary tunnels.
