Dokhtar Castle
Iran, Iran
Dokhtar Castle, also known as Qal’eh Dokhtar, is an ancient Sasanian‑era fortress located on a mountain slope near Firuzabad in Fars Province, about 100 kilometers from Shiraz in southern Iran.
It was built around 209 CE by Ardashir I, the founder of the Sasanian Empire, as a fortified palace and military stronghold along an important mountain pass. The structure features long stone corridors, domes, vaulted halls, and thick walls, reflecting early Sasanian architecture, and today it forms part of the “Sassanian Archaeological Landscape of Fars,” a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
