Verified Domburg Hakel

Selke-Aue, Germany, Germany

Domburg Hakel, also known as Domburg im Hakel, is a medieval lowland castle ruin nestled in the forested Hakel area near Heteborn in Selke-Aue, Germany, within the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt.

Dating possibly to the high Middle Ages with a 13th-century rectangular castellum featuring a 10-meter-high fieldstone defensive wall and preserved narrow gate for mounted riders, it was first documented in 1310 as owned by Ludolph von Knesebeck, whose family allegedly operated as robber barons along nearby trade routes.

Besieged and captured in 1367 by troops from Halberstadt's bishop and regional cities, it later served as a Halberstadt bishopric possession and frequent pledge before abandonment by the 15th century, now accessible via forest trails as a protected cultural monument surrounded by local legends of hidden treasures.
