Dongione (o castello-torre) di Carbonara Scrivia
Italy, Italy
The Dongione, or castle-tower, of Carbonara Scrivia is a rare medieval fortified tower located in the center of Carbonara Scrivia in Piedmont. Dating from the 14th or early 15th century, it was built as the main defensive structure of a larger castle complex that once included walls, a moat, gates, and a fortified enclosure. Over the centuries, the fortress was damaged and rebuilt several times. An earthquake in 1828 and the later collapse of its roof left only the tower standing, making it the sole surviving remnant of the original castle. The tower is notable for its imposing appearance, sloping defensive walls, and distinctive construction using both brick and stone. Today, it is one of the most important historical landmarks in the area and serves as a striking reminder of Carbonara Scrivia’s medieval past.
