The gardens feature a diverse collection of plants with thoughtfully designed landscapes, including manicured gardens, woodlands, meadows, ponds, and water features such as streams and waterfalls. Over time, the gardens were expanded and enhanced by Dow's family, particularly Alden B. Dow, who brought architectural expertise and added elements like bridges and water features, creating a seamless blend of art, nature, and design.

Today, the gardens include the Exploration Garden, Estate Garden, and Whiting Forest with the nation’s longest canopy walk, along with a Butterfly House. Funded and managed by the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, Dow Gardens serves as a public park offering educational programs, art exhibits, and a tranquil setting for people of all ages to enjoy nature and learn about horticulture.
