Dresden Zwinger
Dresden, Germany, Germany
Dresden Zwinger is a magnificent Baroque palace complex in Dresden, Germany, originally conceived around 1710 by Elector Augustus the Strong as an orangery, festival grounds, and entertainment venue between the city's inner and outer fortifications.
Designed by architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann with sculptures by Balthasar Permoser, its U-shaped layout features richly decorated pavilions, galleries adorned with statues and fountains, the iconic Crown Gate with its bulbous dome, and an inner courtyard garden that hosted royal tournaments and operas until its 1719 inauguration.
Construction paused after Augustus's 1733 death but resumed in the 19th century with Gottfried Semper's gallery wing; heavily damaged in 1945 but faithfully rebuilt, it now houses world-class museums like the Old Masters Picture Gallery, Porcelain Collection, and Mathematics-Physics Salon.
