The Ducal Castle of Monte San Giovanni Campano is a remarkable medieval fortress perched on a hilltop in the Lazio region.

Built in the 11th century, it is best known as the place where Saint Thomas Aquinas was confined by his family for several years in an attempt to prevent him from joining the Dominican Order. The castle was once considered one of the strongest fortifications in central Italy, with massive walls and towers protecting the surrounding settlement. 

It also holds a significant place in military history as one of the first fortresses to be successfully breached by portable gunpowder artillery during the French invasion of 1495. Today, its surviving towers, historic rooms, and panoramic views make it one of the region’s most important medieval landmarks.
