Ducal Castle of Corigliano Calabro
Corigliano Calabro, Italy, Italy
The Ducal Castle of Corigliano Calabro is one of the largest and best-preserved castles in southern Italy, dominating the historic town of Corigliano Calabro in Calabria from a hilltop position overlooking the Sibari Plain and the Ionian Sea.
Its origins date back to 1073, when the Norman leader Robert Guiscard ordered the construction of a fortress to strengthen control over the region. Over the centuries, the castle evolved from a military stronghold into an elegant ducal residence under powerful noble families such as the Sanseverino, Saluzzo, and Compagna dynasties.
Extensive renovations added impressive towers, richly decorated halls, chapels, and luxurious apartments, blending medieval defenses with Renaissance and Baroque elegance. Today, the castle is one of Calabria’s most important historic landmarks. Visitors can admire its imposing architecture, beautifully preserved interiors, and famous Hall of Mirrors, while learning about nearly a thousand years of regional history.
