The Ducal Castle of Crecchio is a historic medieval fortress that dominates the hilltop village of Crecchio in Italy’s Abruzzo region.

Originally built between the Lombard and Norman periods and expanded over the centuries, it evolved from a defensive stronghold into a noble residence owned by prominent families, including the De Riseis family. The castle is especially known for its role in World War II, when King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy stayed there in September 1943 while fleeing Rome after Italy’s armistice.

Shortly afterward, the building was damaged by wartime bombing but was later carefully restored. Today, the castle houses the Museum of Byzantine and Early Medieval Abruzzo, displaying important archaeological artifacts from the region. With its towers, fortified walls, and commanding views of the surrounding countryside, it remains the most important landmark of Crecchio and a symbol of the town’s rich history.
