Durrës Castle (Kalaja e Durrësit) is the ancient fortified old city of Durrës, Albania, enclosed by massive walls originally built in the late 5th century by the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I, who was born in Durrës, and later reinforced and modified during the Middle Ages and Ottoman periods. The castle occupies a dominant position on a shallow hill overlooking the historic harbor and the sea, making it a key strategic and cultural center on the Adriatic for centuries, with its defensive system consisting of interconnected walls, numerous towers, and fortified gates that have been partially preserved and today form a protected cultural monument and a major tourist attraction. Notable elements within the fortification include the Venetian Tower, a round 16‑meter‑diameter tower built during Venetian rule (1392–1501) and used as a weapons store and port guard base, as well as other towers such as the Anjou Tower (Kulla e Barutit) and Tower C, which reflect Byzantine, Anjou, Venetian, and Ottoman phases of construction and repair. The castle walls are closely linked to the nearby Durrës Amphitheater, creating a continuous historical corridor of monumental structures that illustrate the succession of Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman civilizations in the city, and the site is now widely visited for its views, archaeological value, and the sense of urban continuity from antiquity to the modern era.
