The Castle of Borsh
Albania, Albania
The Castle of Borsh, also known as Borsh Castle or Sopot Castle, is a historic hilltop fortress perched above the village of Borsh on the Albanian Riviera, overlooking the Ionian Sea.
Built on an ancient acropolis first fortified in the 4th–3rd century BC by Illyrian tribes, it was later rebuilt and expanded during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, serving as a strategic stronghold for controlling trade routes along the coast.
The castle’s thick walls still surround a large area where you can see the ruins of various buildings, cisterns, and a 17th‑century Ottoman mosque, the Hajji Bendo Mosque, all set against panoramic views of the sea and the Sopot valley.
Today the site is mostly in ruins but remains a popular stop for visitors who want to combine beach time in Borsh with a short hike up to a dramatic, sea‑facing castle.
