Eastwoodhill National Arboretum of NZ
Ngatapa, New Zealand, New Zealand
Eastwoodhill Arboretum, the National Arboretum of New Zealand, is located at 2392 Wharekopae Road in Ngatapa, Gisborne, on the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island, approximately 35 kilometers northwest of Gisborne. Founded in 1910 by American farmer Douglas Cook, who planted his first trees on the site, the arboretum spans 135 to 137 hectares (over 330 acres) and houses one of the world's most comprehensive collections of woody plants, with over 15,000 specimens representing 4,000 different taxa including trees, shrubs, and climbers gathered from 81 countries and 6 continents. The collection includes over 25,000 species of exotic and native trees, shrubs, and climbers, featuring the most comprehensive collection of Northern Hemisphere trees south of the equator and 170 species currently on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) world endangered list, making it an "arboreal ark" or safe haven for threatened and endangered trees. Eastwoodhill's immense tree collection received international recognition when it was awarded the inaugural "Arboretum Distinguished for Merit" by The International Dendrology Society in 1978, and its historic one-hectare Homestead Garden dating from 1910 was recognized as a "Garden of National Significance" with a five-star rating by the NZ Gardens Trust, first in 2004 and as recently as 2017.
