Eisenberg Castle, Korbach
Korbach, Germany, Germany
Eisenberg Castle near Korbach in Hesse, Germany, is a medieval ruin atop the 562-meter Eisenberg hill, first documented in 1367 and possibly built late 12th or early 13th century by the Counts of Waldeck or Lords of Itter.
Acquired by the House of Waldeck in the 15th century, it served from 1487 to 1692 as the residence of the Eisenberg branch until their line's extinction, featuring Renaissance expansions including a new wing in 1563 and chapel in 1586.
Abandoned by the late 17th century, it fell into ruin by 1729 and was dismantled from 1741 for building materials, now featuring excavated foundations near the Georg-Viktor Tower with ramparts and moat amid scenic hiking trails.
