Electoral Palace
Trier, Germany, Germany
The Electoral Palace in Trier, Germany, is a grand residence with a rich history that blends Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo architectural styles.
Built between the early 17th century and 1676, it incorporates parts of the Roman Imperial Palace of Constantine the Great, particularly integrating the Roman Basilica of Constantine into its structure. Initially planned by Elector Lothar von Metternich and completed by his successors, the palace was known as Saint Peter’s Castle and served as the residence of the Prince-Electors of Trier until the late 18th century.
The palace consists of three wings showcasing Renaissance and Baroque styles, while the striking south wing was rebuilt in mid-18th century Rococo style, featuring an elaborate pink facade with golden ornamentation designed by architect Johannes Seiz. Over time, the palace has endured damage, especially during World War II, and parts of the Lower Castle were demolished.
Today, it houses government offices and public authorities, while its gardens remain a popular public space. The Electoral Palace stands next to the iconic Roman Basilica, symbolizing Trier’s layered history from Roman times through the electors’ era.
