Ellar Castle
Waldbrunn, Hesse, Germany, Germany
Ellar Castle is a medieval fortress ruin located in the village of Ellar within Waldbrunn, in Hesse's Limburg-Weilburg district, Germany.
Built in the late 13th century, likely by the Counts of Diez to protect imperial roads and a nearby toll station, it was first documented in 1323 and changed hands among local nobility, including Nassau-Hadamar and Katzenelnbogen, before serving as an administrative seat.
Today, the nearly rectangular site measures about 21 by 27 meters with two-meter-thick basalt walls lacking windows or loopholes; a corner tower functions as a viewpoint, and an inner pavilion hosts events.
