Verified Ellwanger Garden

Rochester, New York, United States

Ellwanger Garden in Rochester, New York, is a historic private garden planted in 1867 by George Ellwanger, a prominent 19th-century nurseryman known for his significant contributions to horticulture and the community, including gifting Highland Park to Rochester.

The garden was part of the Ellwanger family estate and was maintained by them until it was bequeathed to the Landmark Society of Western New York in the early 1980s. It features a well-preserved landscape with heirloom pear trees, peonies, roses, shrubs, and perennials that reflect the tastes and horticultural practices of the family over more than a century.

The garden is considered a "living museum" and is open to the public only on select weekends during the annual Lilac Festival in May and Peony Weekend in June, as well as by appointment. It is maintained as a historic site with ongoing preservation efforts supported by visitor donations and volunteer work, offering an opportunity to experience a piece of Rochester's horticultural heritage and beauty.
