Eltville Castle
Eltville, Germany, Germany
Eltville Castle, also called the Kurfürstliche Burg, is a medieval urban castle and landmark in Eltville am Rhein, in Hesse's Rheingau-Taunus district, Germany.
Built from 1330-1345 under Archbishop Baldwin of Luxembourg after a prior tower castle's destruction, with expansions until 1419 including a four-story residential tower, it served as the main residence for Mainz's archbishops and electors for about 150 years.
Badly damaged by Swedish troops in 1635 during the Thirty Years' War—leaving mostly the tower intact—it was partially rebuilt in 1682, restored in 1938 and the 1980s, and now houses a tourist office, castle shop, Gutenberg memorial museum on printing history, and rose gardens earning the town its "Rose Town" nickname.
