The Episcopal Castle of Grottaglie, also known as Castello Episcopio, is a medieval fortress located in the historic center of Grottaglie, near the town’s famous ceramics district.

Built mainly in the late 14th century under Archbishop Giacomo d’Atri, it served for centuries as the residence and administrative seat of the archbishops of Taranto, symbolizing their authority over the region. Over time, the castle was expanded and modified, combining defensive features with more elegant residential elements.

Its most distinctive feature is a tall rectangular keep rising more than 28 meters above the complex, along with courtyards, fortified walls, and historic halls. Today, the castle is owned by the municipality and serves as an important cultural center. It houses the Museum of Ceramics, showcasing Grottaglie’s renowned pottery tradition, and hosts exhibitions and events that celebrate the town’s artistic heritage.
