Erichsberg Castle
Harzgerode, Germany, Germany
Erichsberg Castle, known as Burg Erichsberg or Erichsburg, is a medieval hilltop ruin near Harzgerode in Germany's Harz Mountains, first documented in the 12th century as a Stolberg county stronghold protecting trade routes.
Purchased by Count Heinrich zu Stolberg in 1320, it housed his cousin Hermann's mercenaries who turned to banditry, plundering Thuringia until 1326 when Thuringian nobles and local townsfolk besieged, captured, executed the garrison, and razed the 30-meter diameter core castle, prohibiting its rebuilding.
Today, its faint ramparts offer hikers a Harzer Wandernadel stamping point with Selke Valley views amid forested seclusion.
