Europa-Rosarium
Sangerhausen, Germany, Germany
The Europa-Rosarium, formerly known as Rosarium Sangerhausen, is a municipal rose garden located in Sangerhausen, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, at Steinberger Weg 3, and is recognized as the largest rose collection in the world by both area and variety.
Founded in 1903 by dedicated rose growers to mark the German Rose Lovers Congress, the garden was established by the Sangerhäuser Verschönerungsverein founded in 1896 and has grown from an initial 1.5 hectares to a modern 13-hectare park. The collection contains approximately 80,000 rose bushes representing over 6,300 to 8,600 different rose cultivars and species, including more than 500 species of rare wild roses, about 850 climbing rose varieties from different countries and eras, and rare rarities such as the green rose, black rose, and barbed rose.
The Europa-Rosarium serves as a gene bank and living museum that tracks rose evolution from wild roses to modern varieties, preserving historic and endangered rose types while playing an important role as a budwood source and in research, earning the Award of Garden Excellence from the World Federation of Rose Societies in 2003.
