Faisal Mosque
Islamabad, Pakistan
Faisal Mosque in Islamabad is a striking fusion of modern design and Islamic symbolism, standing proudly at the foot of the Margalla Hills. Completed in 1986 and named after King Faisal of Saudi Arabia—who funded its construction—it serves as Pakistan’s national mosque and one of the largest in the world, with a capacity of up to 300,000 worshippers.
Designed by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay, the mosque breaks from traditional domed architecture. Instead, it resembles a Bedouin tent, with an eight-sided sloping roof and four towering 90-meter minarets—the tallest in South Asia. The main prayer hall is a vast, triangular space adorned with white marble, mosaics, and calligraphy by renowned Pakistani artist Sadequain, while a massive Turkish chandelier adds grandeur to the interior.
Beyond its architectural marvel, Faisal Mosque is a spiritual and cultural landmark. It once housed the International Islamic University and remains a venue for religious events, lectures, and national ceremonies. Its elevated location and minimalist silhouette make it visible from across the city, especially when illuminated at night.
