Verified Fallersleben Castle - Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg, Germany, Germany

Fallersleben Castle, also known as Schloss Fallersleben, is a 16th‑century Renaissance water castle in the Fallersleben district of Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, Germany, and one of the city’s oldest and most important historic buildings alongside Schloss Wolfsburg and Burg Neuhaus.

The castle was built between 1520 and 1551 on the site of an earlier medieval fortress that had been destroyed in the Hildesheim Diocesan Feud (1518–23), and it originally formed a horseshoe‑shaped complex around an inner courtyard before later additions surrounded it entirely with a wide moat.

Today only the west wing with its prominent spiral‑stair tower survives from the original three‑winged palace, standing as a timber‑framed structure on a stone base in the middle of the castle grounds.

The lower level now houses the Hoffmann‑von‑Fallersleben Museum, which explores the life of the poet and linguist August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben and broader themes of 19th‑century German literature and democracy, while the upper floors serve as an art gallery and event spaces, all set within a park by the castle lake and near St. Michael’s Church.
