First mentioned in 1060, it served as a strategic residence, administrative center, refuge, alchemist's workshop, and defense against the archbishops of Mainz, enduring the Thirty Years' War before final destruction in 1762 during the Seven Years' War.
Today, the well-preserved butter-churn keep (Butterfassturm), enclosure walls, kennel towers, and a museum in the former chapel make it a key landmark of this "Three-Castle Town," accessible via paths for hikes with panoramic North Hessian views.
