Verified Fernbank Science Center

Druid Hills, Georgia, United States

Fernbank Science Center in Druid Hills, Georgia, opened in December 1967 and is part of the DeKalb County School District.

It was established as an educational facility to enhance science literacy for students and the general public, focusing particularly on local and state-level science education. The center sits on four acres adjacent to Fernbank Forest, a 65-acre preserved primeval woodland purchased in 1937 for environmental conservation and science education. Fernbank Science Center houses the Jim Cherry Memorial Planetarium, one of the largest in Georgia, featuring a 70-foot diameter dome and a Zeiss Mark V star projector, offering numerous public shows.

The center also contains exhibit halls with dinosaur skeletons, rocks and minerals, an electron microscope lab, and an authentic Apollo spacecraft from the unmanned Apollo 6 mission. Its mission is to foster understanding of science and technology while connecting visitors with the natural world through exhibits, outdoor experiences, and educational programs.
