Festung Ziegenhain
Schwalmstadt, Germany
Festung Ziegenhain in Schwalmstadt, Germany, is a baroque water fortress originally built around a medieval castle dating to at least 950.
It was transformed extensively from 1537 to 1546 under Landgrave Philip I of Hesse into a strategic water fortress featuring a massive ring wall with four bastions, moats filled by the Schwalm River, and a wooden drawbridge as its sole entrance. The fortress was considered nearly impregnable, inspiring the German phrase "so solid as Ziegenhain."
It played significant roles during the Thirty Years' War and other conflicts, with fortified suburbs and additional bastions added later. The fortress was partially dismantled by Napoleon in 1807 but remains a prominent historic monument demonstrating 16th-century military engineering.
Today, parts of the fortress are preserved, including a museum showcasing its history and the original layout as it appeared in the 18th century.
