Named for Austrian Emperor Franz I, the fortress with its redoubt, poterne, and kehlmauer was defortified in 1920-1922 per Versailles Treaty terms, later serving postwar housing before evolving through failed park plans into today's 2-hectare green space with trails, meadows, trees, and a panoramic city balcony.
Preserving underground casemates and walls amid the Festung Koblenz system, it integrates military history with recreation near the Rhine cable car.
