Verified Flora und Botanischer Garten Köln

Cologne, Germany, Germany

Flora und Botanischer Garten Köln is a 11.5-hectare municipal formal park and botanical garden located in Cologne's Riehl district adjacent to the Cologne Zoological Garden at Amsterdamer Straße 34, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and is open daily without charge.

The site combines two originally separate areas: the Flora, a formal park designed by Prussian landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné in the Historicism style and opened in 1864, and the Botanischer Garten der Stadt Köln (Cologne Municipal Botanical Garden), a teaching garden opened in 1914 north of the Flora, which were merged in 1920 when the Flora was transferred from private company ownership to the city.

Today the garden displays over 10,000 to 12,000 plant species from all climate zones of the Earth, including many tropical and subtropical plants, as well as an extensive collection of special and exotic trees and woody plants. The four show greenhouses present approximately 5,000 plant species from regions where climate conditions make outdoor cultivation impossible, notably the Subtropical House open daily 10:00–18:00, which houses tropical and subtropical plants.
