Folkenborg
Mysen, Norway, Norway
Folkenborg, located about one mile southeast of Mysen in Østfold, Norway, is a historic noble estate dating back to the 12th-13th century.
It gained fame as the birthplace in 1204 of King Haakon IV (Håkon Håkonsson), whose mother Inga of Varteig fled there for safety during a turbulent time, protected by local priest Trond who baptized and fostered the future king in secrecy.
The site once featured a medieval church and parsonage, served as the administrative center of Eidsberg until around 1900, and now hosts Folkenborg Museum, which preserves relocated historic buildings, artifacts from 1700-1950, and exhibits on local agriculture, food culture, and early settlement evidenced by nearby burial mounds.
