Fort Asterstein
Koblenz, Germany, Germany
Fort Asterstein is a former Prussian fortification built between about 1817 and 1828 on the right bank of the Rhine in the Asterstein district of Koblenz, as part of the larger Fortress Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein system meant to secure the Rhine–Moselle confluence.
It was originally called Fort Pfaffendorfer Höhe and later named after the Prussian general Ludwig Ernst von Aster, who oversaw the fortress works in Koblenz and Cologne, with the surrounding district also taking the name Asterstein in 1981.
The fort consists of a redoubt with a thick retaining wall, a gatehouse, and several flanking defensive casemates, while most of its outer earthworks and auxiliary walls were dismantled or reduced after the 19th‑century “defortification” of the town.
After the end of its military use in the early 20th century, the site housed newspaper operations and then served as a residential quarter, and today it is a partially preserved historic fortress fragment maintained by a local initiative that offers guided tours and uses the remaining structures as a small cultural and event venue above the Rhine Valley.
