Fort Berge
Magdeburg, Germany, Germany
Fort Berge was a key southern outpost fort of the mighty Prussian Fortress Magdeburg, constructed starting in 1721 under engineers Hans Martin von Bosse and Gerhard Cornelius von Walrave to extend defenses beyond the main city walls.
Planned as early as 1714, it formed part of an expansive 18th-century network of bastions and ravelins that proved impregnable during Napoleon's 1812 retreat, housing notorious prisoners like Friedrich von der Trenck.
Demolished in 1904 for urban development after the fortress's obsolescence, only street names like Sternstraße, the Sterngelände district, and a reconstructed Sterntor at Domplatz now recall its strategic legacy amid modern Magdeburg buildings.
