Fort Großfürst Konstantin
Koblenz, Germany, Germany
Fort Großfürst Konstantin, also known as Fort Konstantin, is a former Prussian fortress on the Karthausberg above the Karthausen district in Koblenz, Germany, built between about 1822 and 1828 as part of the Fortress Koblenz and Ehrenbreitstein system.
It was positioned on the outermost spur of the Hunsrück ridge at roughly 110 meters above the Rhine and Mosel confluence, where it helped protect the steep slopes of the Karthäuser plateau and supported the larger Feste Alexander fortress.
The fort was named after the Russian Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich, brother of Tsar Alexander I, and served as a permanent garrison site with casemates and a Kehlturm adapted for troop housing and later wartime use.
After being rendered obsolete in the early 20th century, it was partly dismantled but saved from total demolition because of its prominent role in the city skyline, and in the 1990s local citizens’ group PRO KONSTANTIN began extensive restoration work.
Today Fort Großfürst Konstantin operates as a cultural and event venue offering guided tours, concerts, and exhibitions, including a permanent show on “Koblenz in World War II,” while preserving much of its original casemate and terrace layout.
