Fort Weisenau
Mainz, Germany, Germany
Fort Weisenau was a key detached fort in Mainz's vast 19th-century ring fortress system in Germany, built from 1826-1831 by Austrian engineers under Colonel Franz von Scholl to guard the vulnerable southern Rhine flank near Weisenau suburb.
Spanning 250 meters with three two-story redoubts, polygonal gun towers, deep moats, and mine galleries worked by 420 laborers, it pioneered deep-defense concepts but became obsolete before completion amid rapid artillery evolution.
Demolished in 1922 per the Versailles Treaty, its remnants like a city-facing gate and casemates survive within Mainz's Volkspark, now a recreation area tracing the Prussian fortress legacy.
