Verified Forte di Bard

Bard, Aosta Valley, Italy, Italy

Forte di Bard is a monumental fortress perched on a rocky outcrop above the village of Bard at the entrance to Italy’s Aosta Valley.

For centuries, its strategic position allowed it to control the main route between Italy and France, making it one of the most important defensive sites in the Alps. The current fortress was built by the House of Savoy between 1830 and 1838 after Napoleon ordered the destruction of an earlier stronghold that had famously delayed his army in 1800.

Its imposing walls, barracks, and defensive structures make it one of the best-preserved 19th-century military fortresses in Europe. Today, Forte di Bard has been fully restored and transformed into a cultural center housing museums, exhibitions, and events. Visitors come to explore its history, learn about the Alps, and enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and valley.
