Verified Forte Filippo

Italy, Italy

Forte Filippo is a large coastal fortress overlooking Porto Ercole on the Monte Argentario peninsula in southern Tuscany.

Built in 1558 by order of Philip II of Spain, it was a key part of the Spanish State of the Presidi's defensive system, designed to protect the harbor and surrounding coastline from enemy attacks. The fortress is known for its imposing square layout, powerful bastions, double defensive walls, deep moat, and strategic hilltop position.

Considered highly difficult to conquer, it served military purposes for centuries and was later used as a prison before being restored in modern times. Today, Forte Filippo remains one of Porto Ercole’s most impressive landmarks. Although the interior has been converted into private residences, visitors can admire its well-preserved exterior and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the harbor, the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the surrounding Argentario coastline.
