Forte La Carnale is a historic coastal fort in Salerno, built in the 16th century as part of a defensive system designed to protect the city from pirate and Saracen raids.

Located near the mouth of the Irno River, it originally served as a watchtower where mounted guards could quickly warn the population of approaching threats from the sea. The fort’s name is linked to a local tradition recalling a fierce battle against Saracen raiders in 872. Over the centuries, it was used for various military purposes, including as a command post during anti-Spanish uprisings and later as a Bourbon ammunition depot.

It also suffered damage during World War II. Today, Forte La Carnale is a restored landmark overlooking the Gulf of Salerno. Known for its historic architecture, gardens, and panoramic sea views, it serves as a cultural venue and remains an important symbol of the city’s maritime and military heritage.
