Forte Vigliena is an 18th century coastal fortress located in the San Giovanni a Teduccio district of Naples.

Built between 1702 and 1706 under the Spanish viceroy Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco, Marquis of Villena, it was designed to protect the eastern approaches to Naples and serve as a key artillery position defending the bay. The fort is best known for its role in the dramatic events of 1799, when supporters of the short-lived Neapolitan Republic made their last stand there against royalist forces.

Rather than surrender, the defenders reportedly detonated the fort’s gunpowder stores, causing a massive explosion that destroyed much of the structure and made the site a symbol of sacrifice and resistance. Today, only ruins of Forte Vigliena remain, but it is still recognized as an important historical monument. Its surviving walls and towers serve as a reminder of Naples’ military history and the political struggles that shaped the city.
