Fortezza Albornoz
Urbino, Italy, Italy
Fortezza Albornoz is a historic fortress that stands on the highest hill overlooking Urbino in Italy’s Marche region.
Built in the 14th century on the orders of Cardinal Albornoz, it was designed to strengthen papal authority and protect the city from its commanding position. The fortress was damaged and rebuilt several times over the centuries, and its present appearance reflects these later reconstructions. Although originally a military stronghold, it eventually lost its defensive role and the surrounding area was converted into a public park.
Today, Fortezza Albornoz is one of Urbino’s most popular viewpoints, offering spectacular panoramas of the UNESCO-listed historic center and the rolling hills of the Marche countryside. Its combination of history, architecture, and scenic beauty makes it an important landmark of the city.
